Day 93 – A Year of Stitches 2017

April 3, 2017

Another quiet day today.  I have been working on a tote made from seat belt webbing, hopefully I will finish it this week.  Also, today is Opening Day for the Washington Nationals, so I wanted to make sure I was in front of the tv to see it!

Stitch-wise, continuing on my tree….

Day 92 – A Year in Stitches 2017

April 2, 2017

A sunny quiet day.  After church, the family went to a used book store, leaving and taking books…

To start the new week, I decided to start on  a palm tree.  I used stem stitch to  work on one side of the trunk.

Day 49, Week 7, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

February 11, 2017 Flowers continued this week.  I added sunflower buttons from a kit I found in my needlework stash.  The buttons are by the same artist that made the crow button from last week.  I also found a bee hive, pumpkin, pilgrim’s hat, and worm from more of her kits.  These were purchased BK:  […]

This week I decided to take a break from my large hoop I have been working on.  When I decided to join this challenge, I had run across a couple of post on social media talking about a book titled  “Boho Embroidery.”  I purchased this book and decided to take the plunge and try to adapt a project using the suggestions in the book.

So, this week I complete one hoop!  Today I finished up the stitching and embellishments for the design.  Later on this week I will finish fastening the fabric to the hoop and sign and date it on the back.  I love working on it, and I may try similar projects during this year of stitches.

When I went to the local needlework shop this week, I discovered one of the cotton floss companies I like also makes pearl cotton #5.  So, I used the same colors from Weeks Dye Works in two different fibers.  I picked out a dandelion flower on my base fabric and decided to highlight it with stem stitch, back stitch, and french knots.  To add a pop of colors, some of my 11/0 bead stash was added.  I am really pleased with how this picture turned out!

Day 49:

Stitch:  Stem Stitch, Back Stitch, French Knot, Straight Stitch, adding beads

Fiber:  Weeks Dye Works cotton embroidery floss and pearl cotton #5 in Whitewashed, used two ply for back stitch and straight stitch, one ply for attaching beads, Sampler Threads from The Gentle Art in Butternut Squash, two ply used for french knots, 11/0  Czech Glass seed beads in Dark Coral Luster

Day 42, Week 6, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

February 11, 2017

Flowers continued this week.  I added sunflower buttons from a kit I found in my needlework stash.  The buttons are by the same artist that made the crow button from last week.  I also found a bee hive, pumpkin, pilgrim’s hat, and worm from more of her kits.  These were purchased BK:  before kids!

I also added new fibers to my stash this week.  After seeing all the beautiful threads people are using on their projects, I tried to find some locally.  I had no luck for the specialty threads, but when I stopped at Jo~Ann’s looking for suede for a church project, I lucked out finding some DMC Perle Coton #5.  Several colors were marked down in their “Color Variations” in both perle cotton #5 and cotton embroidery floss.  I used two colors in the #5 for this week’s stems, leaves, grass, and wind gusts.

Day 42:

Stitch:  Stem Stitch, Detached Chain Stitch, Satin Stitch

Fiber:  DMC Coton Perle #5 Color Variations in number 4050, single strand

Day 37 – A Year of Stitches 2017

February 6, 2017

Today is a sunny Monday!  My son is off for a teacher workday, or to recover from watching the Superbowl.  Good timing!!  This morning I ran some errands, which brought me to Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts.  I needed some micro suede for a church project, and I just needed to make sure I was not missing anything!  After finding the suede, I found two new flannels and a cotton floral.  Those made it to the cutting counter.

After going through the fabric, I checked out the yarn/cross stitch section of the store.  I hit the jackpot!  In addition to finding a couple of hoops, I found DMC fibers.  Several colors of the variegated perle cotton 5 were marked down, as well as some other fibers.  Here is the loot I came home with:

I will see how long I can hold off searching the internet for some of the other fibers I see being used during this year of stitches with these colors.

When I finally got home, ate leftovers, and checked the mail, I decided to use some of the DMC fibers I picked up earlier last week.  I added a nice substantial stem for my sunflower. I love how the colors change!!

Day 37:

Stitch:  Stem Stitch and Detached Chain Stitch for leaves

Fiber:  DMC Coton Perle #5 Color Variations, number 4050

Day 27 – A Year of Stitches 2017

January 27, 2017

Today got off to a busy start!  I sold a pair of earrings from my Etsy shop, went to mail them and realized I needed mailers!  Off to the Dollar Tree I went, picked them up and packaged them up and sent those earrings off to sunny California!  Then I tracked down our 9 year old cat, shoved him in his cage for a vet visit.  You would think he likes being the only one in the household receiving pedicures, but no!  He yelled all the way to the vet and all the way home.  Right now I have not seen him for an hour…..He does not have to worry about going again until he starts sticking to things….or I can hear him clicking!

Stitching wise, I added some stems to my new roses this week, using the same color as before.  I think I will add some leaves tomorrow, but I need to think about which stitch to use for them today.

Day 21, Week 3, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

January 21, 2017

Week three finished!!

This week I added the start of a flower garden.  Since our weather here in Northern Virginia has been overcast and yucky (can you tell I was an English major in college?), I wanted some color!   I used only two stitches this week, the Woven Wheel or Spider Woven Wheel Stitch and the Stem Stitch.  My fiber selections were dyed cotton floss from two companies.
