Day 95 – A Year in Stitches 2017

April 5, 2017

A quiet, busy day.  Helped get my church’s food closet set up for tomorrow morning, went to get a zipper for a purse I am finishing up, and laundry!!  Later on today I will pick up the junior from school.

I did get the rest of my silk thread from The Thread Gatherer’s Etsy store….Here is a picture:

Day 94 – A Year of Stitches 2017

April 4, 2017

Today was Bible study day and going to the local needlework shop and picking up the framed Shepherd’s Bush “The Promise” piece that was over 15 years in the making….See what happens when I go through my craft room?  Here is the finished piece:

“The Promise” by Shepherd’s Bush

I used a suede mat to match another completed Shepherd’s Bush Christmas piece.  The two pieces will be hanging near each other.

While at my local needlework store, In Stitches in Alexandria, VA, I could not help picking up some new fibers!  Last weekend I ordered some Silk ‘N Colors from The Thread Gather on their Etsy shop.  The two colors I picked out were limited editions only through their site.  I picked up some more colors today at the shop.  Bright bold colors!!

The Thread Gather Silk ‘N Colors in Sweet Lavender, Wild Blue Yonder, Rose Manor, Bubble Gum (left to right)

So now to the daily progress!  I added bark to my palm tree, I guess I used a Satin Stitch in cotton floss….I  am not sure which floss or color, but I am pretty sure it is a Weeks Dye Works product.

Day 56, Week 8, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

February 25, 2017

Remember the week I took  a break from my large hoop?  Well, I finally finished it off!  Using the guide for finishing from the “Boho Embroidery” book, I trimmed the excess fabric with pinking shears, glued the fabric to the back of the embroidery hoop and backed it with a piece of wool felt I picked up from Michaels.

What I learned was that I needed to plan ahead and cut the backing felt BEFORE I sewing the piece in the hoop….Oops…The felt just fits inside the back of the hoop with no glue.  I also jotted my initials and the year with pen on the inside of the hoop.  Not very neat so no picture!  Here it is hanging on the wall.

Back to the main hoop….I decided to continue stitching around the bottom of the hoop, to the left of my previous work.  Spring-like weather is visiting Northern Virginia this week..think May instead of February!  So, Easter is on my mind.  I used several variegated fibers this week, new velvet fibers, and new stitches!

Today I learned a new stitch to add to my library.  I learned the fishbone stitch to fill in an egg.  I also used satin stitch and double cross stitch for the other two eggs.  Silk and velvet were the fibers used.

Day 56:

Stitch:  Satin Stitch Double Cross Stitch and Fishbone Stitch (from left to right of final three eggs.)

Fiber:  Classic Colorworks hand dyed silk in Aqua Velvet 2 ply, Petite Very Velvet in V629 single strand, The Thread Gatherer in Silk ‘N Colors in Fairy Quilt Cottage 2 ply

Year to Day Ending February 25, 2017 – Week 8

Day 55 – A Year of Stitches 2017

February 24, 2017

Filling in a few Easter eggs on my hoop today.

Earlier this morning, I ran out to my local needlework shop to pick up some silk thread to finish a Shepherd’s Bush kit I unearthed when searching my stash.  I obviously used a whole lot more dark tan than I was suppose to use, or lost it after 15+ years in between starting the piece and finding it and finishing!  What made it fun was the numbers changed since the chart was printed, so I needed to match colors…I was soooo happy I brought the piece with me to the shop.  While I was waiting for help, I browsed the racks and found velvet thread!!  One of the ladies I follow on Instagram did french knots on her hoop using a cream velvet thread.  The velvet thread added a wonderful texture to the work, but I did not know where to find it….They had it!!  I picked up two cards in pink and orange hues.  I used the pink today.  The velvet does look wonderful….

I used two leftover pieces of the DMC Color Variations cotton embroidery floss and my new card of Very Velvet.  I don’t know for sure what the colors are for the DMC, but I have used them before during this year.

Day 55:

Stitch:  French Knots in first egg on the left, Satin Stitch for second egg, Straight Stitch for third egg

Fiber:  First two filled eggs, DMC Color Variations embroidery floss in various colors, used leftovers, 2 ply used, third egg, Very Velvet fiber in V250, single ply

Day 48 – A Year of Stitches 2017

February 17, 2017

My house is healthier…my husband made it to work today.  I made a run to my local needlework shop to pick up whatever fibers caught my eye, mainly perle cotton #5, clearance silk, and a new pattern…as if I needed a new chart!  The shop is very close to Woodlawn Plantation, which is getting ready for their annual needlework show and sale.  (link: ), which runs the entire month of March.

Today on my hoop I added bird #2’s eye.  I decided not to use a french knot, because I felt the knot would need to be so big that it would leap off the hoop!

Day 48:

Stitch:  Satin Stitch

Fiber:  Weeks Dye Works in Whitewash, 2 ply used.

Day 44 – A Year of Stitches 2017

February 13, 2017

Monday morning….my son’s school system delayed opening by two hours today because of numerous power outages in the county.   No snow, but since late last night, high wind gusts are moving through the DMV area.  I have collected lots of extra trash in our yard, but we are blessed to have electricity and all our trees intact.  Of course, last week I stitched wind gusts on my hoop, so today I will avoid adding any weather related themes to any embroidery hoops!

Note:  I am using colors that match (sort of) the one bird on the other bird….hope that makes sense….

Day 44:

Stitch:  Satin Stitch for bird #2 legs

Fiber:  Sampler Threads from The Gentle Art in Bittersweet, 2 ply used.
