Day 84, Week 12, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

March 25, 2017

Spring is trying to visit Northern Virginia!  Today we are going to be in the 70s, so we are starting to tidy up the yard.  We had our large wild cherry tree and crepe myrtle pruned and are working on the screened porch.

This week, I decided to add a sandy beach to the tropical section of my hoop.  So, some chain stitch and lots of french knots!!  Hopefully I will finish the beach next week….

Day 84

Day 77, Week 11, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

March 18, 2017

Quiet day today.  Husband and I went to the Salvation Army to donate items.  He wants to start cleaning out the basement in anticipation for moving, which won’t happen for a couple of years, we hope!

This week was finishing up the tropical section of my main hoop.  I needed the reminder of the warmth and sun because we received snow/sleet/rain during the northeaster storm during the week.  My son missed one day and was late two days this week for school.  Today was adding a starfish.

So, I am not sure what I will stitch next, so I will decide starting tomorrow on week 12!

Day 70, Week 10, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

March 11, 2017

Today is a big day in our household, our youngest is taking the SAT.  That means he is one step closer to going off to college.  Just like his sister, he wants to go way far away from the parents…to the University of Oklahoma….Just like his grandpa and mom!!  (Yes, I too ran far away from Northern Virginia for college..but I was next to grandparents!)  So today’s stitching was low key, adding more mini waves…

This week was working on the waves on the next section of hoop.  I realized on Wednesday that I was either going to add lots of detail in a couple of days, or work on this section for more than one week.  So this section is not finished!  Come back next week to see what happens, it will be a surprise for me and you!

Day 56, Week 9, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

March 4, 2017

This week was completing a section of my main hoop.  I pulled inspiration from the warm weather and the approach of Easter…I know, more than a month away, but the warm weather makes it seems closer….

I finished up the week today with adding the sun….I used four stitches in a piece of leftover yellow floss…I don’t know the color or company…sorry.

Day 63:

Stitch:  Chain Stitch, Straight Stitch, French Knots, and Back Stitch

Fiber:  Leftover piece of cotton floss from one of the hand dyed companies….sorry!, used 2 ply

Day 56, Week 8, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

February 25, 2017

Remember the week I took  a break from my large hoop?  Well, I finally finished it off!  Using the guide for finishing from the “Boho Embroidery” book, I trimmed the excess fabric with pinking shears, glued the fabric to the back of the embroidery hoop and backed it with a piece of wool felt I picked up from Michaels.

What I learned was that I needed to plan ahead and cut the backing felt BEFORE I sewing the piece in the hoop….Oops…The felt just fits inside the back of the hoop with no glue.  I also jotted my initials and the year with pen on the inside of the hoop.  Not very neat so no picture!  Here it is hanging on the wall.

Back to the main hoop….I decided to continue stitching around the bottom of the hoop, to the left of my previous work.  Spring-like weather is visiting Northern Virginia this week..think May instead of February!  So, Easter is on my mind.  I used several variegated fibers this week, new velvet fibers, and new stitches!

Today I learned a new stitch to add to my library.  I learned the fishbone stitch to fill in an egg.  I also used satin stitch and double cross stitch for the other two eggs.  Silk and velvet were the fibers used.

Day 56:

Stitch:  Satin Stitch Double Cross Stitch and Fishbone Stitch (from left to right of final three eggs.)

Fiber:  Classic Colorworks hand dyed silk in Aqua Velvet 2 ply, Petite Very Velvet in V629 single strand, The Thread Gatherer in Silk ‘N Colors in Fairy Quilt Cottage 2 ply

Day 49, Week 7, YTD– A Year of Stitches 2017

February 11, 2017 Flowers continued this week.  I added sunflower buttons from a kit I found in my needlework stash.  The buttons are by the same artist that made the crow button from last week.  I also found a bee hive, pumpkin, pilgrim’s hat, and worm from more of her kits.  These were purchased BK:  […]

February 18, 2017

This week I decided to take a break from my large hoop I have been working on.  When I decided to join this challenge, I had run across a couple of post on social media talking about a book titled  “Boho Embroidery.”  I purchased this book and decided to take the plunge and try to adapt a project using the suggestions in the book.

So, this week I complete one hoop!  Today I finished up the stitching and embellishments for the design.  Later on this week I will finish fastening the fabric to the hoop and sign and date it on the back.  I love working on it, and I may try similar projects during this year of stitches.

When I went to the local needlework shop this week, I discovered one of the cotton floss companies I like also makes pearl cotton #5.  So, I used the same colors from Weeks Dye Works in two different fibers.  I picked out a dandelion flower on my base fabric and decided to highlight it with stem stitch, back stitch, and french knots.  To add a pop of colors, some of my 11/0 bead stash was added.  I am really pleased with how this picture turned out!

Day 49:

Stitch:  Stem Stitch, Back Stitch, French Knot, Straight Stitch, adding beads

Fiber:  Weeks Dye Works cotton embroidery floss and pearl cotton #5 in Whitewashed, used two ply for back stitch and straight stitch, one ply for attaching beads, Sampler Threads from The Gentle Art in Butternut Squash, two ply used for french knots, 11/0  Czech Glass seed beads in Dark Coral Luster
